Proper Hand Washing: The Importance During Coronavirus

Why is Proper Hand Washing Important?

Proper handwashing continues to be one of the most effective and important ways to prevent illness from spreading to yourself and others. When you wash your hands with soap and water, it removes germs from your hands and in turn, prevents the spread from occurring in a number of ways.

During the Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic, keeping hands clean is especially important to help prevent the virus from spreading.

Without washing your hands, germs can spread when you:
  • Touch your eyes
  • Touch your nose
  • Touch your mouth
  • Prepare food and drinks
  • Eat food and drinks
  • Blow nose, cough, or sneeze into hands
  • Touch other people
  • Touch common objects, or frequently touched surfaces

A study from 2015 found participants touched their faces an average of 23 times an hour. Because people frequently touch their face and surfaces without realizing it, people often forget to wash their hands. Germs ultimately have numerous entry ways into our bodies.

When to Wash Your Hands

The unprecedented time of Coronavirus heightens the importance of personal health and preventative measures. The introduction of masks, like KN95 Masks and face coverings, and businesses reopening present new and reinforced situations we may be exposed to illness and need to focus on our hand hygiene.

It is especially important to wash your hands in these circumstances:

Coronavirus leaves many of us feeling unsure of our own practices and the effectiveness. However, before Covid-19, handwashing was always recommended by the CDC and only takes five steps.

  1. Wet hands with clean, running water
  2. Apply soap in hands and lather by rubbing together
  3. Scrub hands for at least 20 seconds. Make sure to clean between fingers, back of hands, and under nails! Did you know antibacterial soap isn’t any more effective than regular soap? There is no need to stress over what type of soap you use.
  4. Rinse hands under clean, running water
  5. Dry hands with a clean towel or air dry

The common recommendation of singing the “Happy Birthday” twice is old school.

The chorus of these popular songs work as well:

  • “No Scrubs” by TLC
  • “Thriller” by Michael Jackson
  • “Let It Go” (from Disney) by Idina Menzel
What Do I Need for Proper Hand Washing?

The essential items you need to properly wash your hands include:

  • Clean, running water
  • Soap
  • Clean towel and/or hand dryer

These resources seem simple, but many workplaces and locations do not have access to traditional wash sinks.

As businesses and public places continue to open up, the feasibility of providing proper hand washing station becomes more important. Industries that employ a large number of people, like construction sites, require access by county mandate but don’t always possess traditional sinks.

Portable hand washing stations provide a solution for spaces that need the basic resources or just want to employ more designated hand washing areas.

What is the Purpose of a Portable Hand Washing Station?

Some environments that require continuous and convenient access to hand washing include:

  • Classrooms
  • Food service
  • Medical and health facilities
  • Construction work sites
  • Distribution centers

Portable hand washing stations are useful in these types of environments, especially when hygiene and safety is a priority. A portable system guarantees access and opportunity for proper personal hygiene.

The mobile feature allows a sink to move around a facility with easy set-up and handling when a traditional sink is not available. They provide convenience due to the ability to be used indoor and outdoor.

Portable sinks come in various configurations, ranging in the number of sinks or features. Tie Down’s 2 Sink Compact offers 100% touch-free soap, water, and paper towel dispensing. Certain industries, like the construction industry, require handwashing facilities.

Tie Down’s portable hand washing station complies with OSHA 1910.1020:

Employers shall provide handwashing facilities which are readily accessible to employees.”

When a workplace doesn’t have a permanent handwashing facility available, a portable hand washing station makes sure a business stays compliant with applicable health standards. Look for your county requirements to see how many stations you need!

Unfortunately, some environments may not supply a permanent or portable hand washing station. If soap and water are not available, the CDC recommends using a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Above all else, make sure to employ these preventative measures during the Coronavirus pandemic:

  • Frequent handwashing
  • Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Social distancing of at least 6 feet
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
